uOttawa Geophysics at the 2027 ACAPS workshop in New Zealand

The uOttawa Geophysics Group is actively preparing for the Aotearoa-Canada Amphibious Plate-boundary Seismotectonics (ACAPS) workshop to be held at Victoria University of Wellington (VUW), New Zealand, in February 2027. This workshop is jointly organized by VUW professor Martha Savage and our group, and will involve the participation of several Canadian and New Zealand researchers who will share their research on the structure and dynamics of tectonic plate boundaries. This workshop is funded by a Catalyst: Leaders grant to Profs. Savage and Audet to enhance collaboration in offshore seismology between New Zealand and Canada.

The workshop program features a training session on OBS data pre-processing, public lectures by global experts in earthquake science, two days of scientific presentations, and a field trip! Our group will be presenting our work on the Earthquakes and Locking inVEstigation of Subduction (ELVES) project. Preliminary titles are:

  • Pascal Audet: Deep structure of New Zealand
  • Theodore Stanoev: Characterizing ambient seismic noise in New Zealand
  • MaĆ«l Roussey: The seismic soundscape offshore northern New Zealand using the ELVES data
  • Finley St-Denis: Ambient noise tomography of southern Hikurangi
  • Sarah Pelchat: Teleseismic shear-wave splitting offshore Hikurangi
  • Bonus: Quan Zhang (former group member): Water saturation variation in mantle transition zone reveals the two-stage subduction history of Hikurangi plateau.

We hope to see you in Wellington!
